That was a question I had to ask myself in my own journey as a businesswoman, during which I had to face the alarming reality that I was clueless about how to handle my money! I loved working with my clients, but money was…just there. Like air.
At first I tried to ignore it by leaving the “money stuff” in my husband’s hands, but then I realized how low my money-self-esteem was and how it was affecting me in every area of my life. By compartmentalizing money and not acknowledging its influence in the daily decisions I was making, I was thwarting my own personal growth, so I decided to do something about it.
The most logical option to me was a full-fledged intensive about personal finances.
But it didn’t work. I found it extremely boring to wade through the endless planners and Excel sheets,—making me feel even more inadequate around money than before.
Even though I do believe that a good course about personal finances will probably be helpful for a woman who wants to overcome her money issues, I found the logical/analytical approach much too masculine. Furthermore, I could not come to terms with the “one size fits all” method of these generic courses.
But I did not give up. After having met the money-savvy Virtuous Woman in 31st Chapter of the Book of Proverbs, I was convinced women were designed by God to be wise stewards over any resource He entrusted them with, including money.
This was my plan to get empowered with my money once and for all:
A. God’s Word first.
I wanted to lay a good biblical foundation for my relationship with money. I studied the Bible and asked God for wisdom about money and about how I should relate to it. The response was very simple and, at the same time, profound:
Although the Bible clearly advocates good stewardship over money (The Book of Proverbs is full of wisdom over this subject), it is also clear we should never stress out about providing for ourselves, but rest in God and His faithfulness to provide for us while we focus on walking out His perfect and exciting plan for our lives.
B. Pray for a way I could improve my relationship with money in the practical sense that would appeal to me.
After making the decision to change my relationship with money based on God’s Scriptures, He started giving me fresh revelations about how to do it in a fun way that was also meaningful to me.
My breakthrough came when I discovered that people relate to money differently according to their personality type. I learned that I could face my money challenges with much more success if I was clear about what my unique money strengths and weaknesses are. That helped me find solutions that made me feel authentic with who I am.
For the first time in my life I felt comfortable and around money and confident in managing it well!
Soon after that I became certified as a Money Coach and today I regularly incorporate a personalized money assessment to help my clients improve their relationship with money in their businesses and personal life
